Introduction
Study Blocking
What is study blocking?
For the most part, learning is an enjoyable process. Studies have found that we are most fulfilled when working towards a task that involves some form of learning. This makes sense; your brain is made for learning. It thrives on new information – pushing itself to adapt and rewire. One of the most devastating things you can do to your brain is deprive it of stimuli. In other words, to stop learning.
Let’s be honest, learning is rarely always enjoyable.
Think about a topic you enjoy learning. What about if you were forced to learn this for 12 hours straight? It wouldn’t seem good anymore, but why is this? How can something we are both passionate about and love learning become unbearable?
The answer is… breaks.
If you didn’t give yourself breaks between your learning, it would soon lose all its pleasure. Once your pleasure is gone, your motivation soon follows, and before long, your ability to keep learning is non-existent. So there you have it. One of the most damaging things to your learning is, in fact, not enough breaks.
If you’re still not convinced, research also found that forcefully sticking to a task without adequate breaks leads to a substantial drop in focus and effectiveness of learning. The verdict is clear – we work best when studying in intervals, ensuring we give ourselves enough breaks in between.
There’s no such thing as effective learning without breaks.
